atv baby

when i was little, the number one concern everywhere was parents that let their babies ride atvs. for a while there were no cell phones for the atv-riding babies to look at. then when there were cell phones, we didn't know enough about them. now we know too much. the cell phones taught me how to center a div and walk among the dead. all the while they led me along a narrow path between dry grasses where the wind did not blow and insects would not be found. my eyes clouded. my gums pulled back from my teeth. i lost hours to the hypnotic rhythm of my gait. they led me to the shoreline where i watched the waves heave themselves onto the sand. some submerged quietly. others cried from the grasp of the riptide. when the water touched my feet the two halves of me jackknifed. somewhere behind my sternum a great machine kicked back into life. i became an animal only capable of missing my atv.
